In 1498 when the Columbus brothers founded it on the eastern bank of the Ozama River, Santo Domingo became the most important city on the island and the New World, playing a leading roll in the history of America.

It was the first settlement raised to the status of city in 1503 trough the Papal Bula of Pope Julius III.
