Sports

The Dominican Republic offers an amazing array of recreation and sports activities, both as a participant and as spectator.

BASEBALL

The National sport of the Dominican Republic. Dominicans outnumber all other Latin American nations with the most ballplayers in the North American Major League. Most US clubs have academies or camps in the Dominican Republic. Professional Season: October to the end of January. The games are played at Quisqueya Stadium in Santo Domingo and at stadiums in Santiago, San Pedro de Macoris, and La Romana.



BASKETBALL

Played at Palacio de los Deportes. Professional Season: June to the end of August. Amateur leagues play year-round in major cities.

BILLIARDS

There are many pool halls distributed throughout Santo Domingo and towns of the interiors as well as in certain hotels and private clubs.



BOWLING

BOXING

Professional and amateur boxing is held at the Palacio de los Deportes.



GOLF

TENNIS

Amateur and professional. The Marlboro Cup, the most important tournament on an international level, is held each year in November.



JOGGING

If you normally walk or run daily, there are green areas in the city where it is possible to do so leisurely, such as the Olympic Center, the Malecon, the Paseo de los Indios, or Mirador del Sur Avenue, where you also have the opportunity of greeting the President of the Republic during his habitual walk.

FISHING SPORTS

The crystal waters of our coasts offer the opportunity of practicing this sports guided by professionals. Some of the finest fishing in the Caribbean is off the Dominican Coast. Fishing for blue marlin, dolphin fish, sailfish wahoo and others is very popular. The best spots include Cumayasa, La Romana, Cabeza de Toro, and Boca de Yuma to the east of the Capital; Palmar de Ocoa and Barahona, to the south; and Montecristi, Puerto Plata and Samana to the north. Every area has offers boats for rent along with guides. International tournaments are held annually.

BOCA CHICA

Shallow waters, a light slope and incredibly white sands make this the most visited beach in Santo Domingo.



JUAN DOLIO AND GUAYACANES

A delight for those seeking softer waves and peaceful sands.



BARAHONA

La Saladilla, Rio Cano, San Rafael, Los Patos, Paraiso and other beautiful sunny beaches line the peninsula.

AZUA DE COMPOSTELA

Palmar de Ocoa is an open beach with grey sand and deep water, with an exotic view and rich marine fauna which make it an appropriate spot for sports fishing. Corbanito is another open cove with 3 km of white sand and blue water, with shallow bathing areas protected from marine life by reefs. Playa Chiquita, with grey sands and crystal clear water of a medium depth with almost no waves is preferred by bathers.



SAN CRISTOBAL

The beaches of Najayo, Nigua and Palanque have crystal-clear water where one can go deep-sea fishing.

SOSUA

Sosua Beach is located in an open inlet, and offers beachcombers a splendid panoramic view of golden sands, almond trees and coconut palms. It is a favorite vacation spot of natives and visitors who return yearly to enjoy the strong waves.



PLAYA DORADA

Tranquil waters enclaved in an open inlet protected by coral reefs and an extensive area of powdery golden sand. Other beaches on the Amber Coast are Cabarete, Boca de Cangrejo, Cano Grande, Bergantin, Playa de Copello and Playa Mariposa.

PUERTO PLATA BEACHES

Cofresi is a small inlet of crystal-clear waters with a beach that is a little inder on km long and covered with coconut pams, offering a splendid view of almost the entire zone. Costambar is an open beach protected by coral reefs and the shade of almond trees. Long Beach is Puerto Plata's urban beach, also covered with almond trees and coconut palms, accessible to all guests of the city's hotels and inns.
